SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The mother, uncle, and grandfather of a 13-year-old were charged following the death of the child from 2022, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

The 13-year-old died on October 8th, 2022, and weighed 47 pounds at the time of death.

The mother, Hope Rae Fish, was charged with murder, inflicting great bodily injury on a child, and unlawful conduct toward a child. Officials said she failed to give her child the prescribed medications he needed for months leading up to his death. The medication was for the child’s diagnosed seizure disorder, the affidavit said.

The child was in “poor health” during his last medical visit in May of 2022. He eventually lost the ability to walk given the lack of proper nutrition and medication. Officials said the child lived in “deplorable conditions” at home.

The uncle, Freddie Fish II, was a home health aide and “failed to render any aid or seek medical attention for his nephew when his condition rapidly declined,” the affidavit said.

Fish II was charged with accessory before the fact to a violent felony and unlawfully placing a child at risk.

Freddie Fish, the grandfather, was a daily caregiver to the child. He was charged with unlawfully placing a child at risk.

SLED charged all three on on Wednesday, April 24th.

All three remain in the custody of the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
