The mother of a 3-year-old boy who died in a car crash in Sampson County was charged in connection with his death.
According to court documents. Brittiney Nicole Simmons, 33, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle from a crash on Oct. 16 on Autry Mill Road.
Highway Patrol said Simmons was driving a Ford Expedition while traveling north when she ran off the road. Troopers said she then overcorrected, reentered the roadway and ran off the left shoulder before hitting a ditch and a tree. Her SUV flipped several times before coming to a stop in a yard.
3-year-old Walker Lambert, who was Simmons’s son, was killed in the crash, while her other two children, a 13-year-old and a 5-year-old, were taken to the hospital.
Troopers told WRAL News that Simmons was the only person in the SUV wearing a seatbelt and that speed was a factor in the crash.
