Mom convicted of attempted murder for shooting daughter in Seat Pleasant

Talecka Brown shot her daughter in the back of the neck, and then told the 13-year-old girl to lie to officers about what happened.

SEAT PLEASANT, Md. — A 33-year-old woman has been convicted of first-degree attempted murder for shooting her then-13-year-old daughter during an argument last year.

On Sept. 23, 2024, officers responded to the 500 block of 69th Place in Seat Pleasant just before 5 p.m. for a reported shooting. When police arrived, they found the teenager near the front door with a gunshot wound to her neck.

Officers with the Prince George’s County Gun Crimes Unit began investigating what happened. They reviewed surveillance video showing the moments before and after the shooting.

According to court documents, the teen came home, grabbed the trashcan from the curb, placed it on the side of the house and then went it inside. The teen told police, once inside she and her mother, Talecka Brown, got into an argument that turned physical

During the altercation, the teen said she noticed Brown was holding a gun. The teen then proceeded to walk away towards the stairs, before hearing a single gunshot. She said she remembers falling down the stairs and not being able to move.

Her mother told her to tell police that she was shot by an intruder in the house. When officers reviewed the surveillance cameras in the neighborhood, they reported that no one was seen walking in or out of the front or back door of the house between the time the teen came home and when the 911 call went out.

A gun and shell casing were recovered from the home.

When officers interviewed Brown she admitted that she and her daughter were the only ones inside of the home at the time of the shooting.

On Friday, Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Tara H. Jackson announced Brown was convicted of attempted first-degree murder,  first-degree child abuse, first-degree assault and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony related to the shooting.

“It is unimaginable that a mother would turn on her own child in such a violent way,” Jackson said. “A mother has a duty to love, protect, and nurture her child, not cause them harm. Our hearts are with this young survivor, who endured a level of pain and fear no child should ever experience. We want to thank our prosecutors and law enforcement partners for their diligent work in ensuring accountability in this case as well as the jury for their service.”

Brown faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. Sentencing in this case is scheduled for Feb. 19, 2026.
