Modesto to replace major homeless program after sudden shutdown

(FOX40.COM) — The city of Modesto is racing to find a replacement for a major program that’s helped the homeless for two decades.

Downtown Streets Team, which is a nonprofit that has provided job training, case management and pathways to housing for homeless individuals, is set to shut down by Oct. 31.

“Downtown Streets Team really worked directly with our homeless population to give them a sense of purpose,” Modesto’s community and economic development director, Jessica Hill, said. “Through the job training component and litter abatement, they were able to have that purpose and have somewhere to go to and the building of a community.”

The organization serves across 16 communities, but officials say some challenges have made it impossible to continue.

“The current political and financial environment has significantly impacted the organization’s ability to continue sustainable programs,” the non-profit said in a statement to FOX40.

City officials said they are working quickly to find a replacement program.

“Currently, staff is looking for alternatives to continue to bring the same model, even with a different organization within the city of Modesto,” Hill said.

Downtown Streets Team added that they are coordinating with local organizations to make sure current participants continue to receive vital services.

With homelessness remaining one of the city’s top priorities, Hill said a new partner will need to keep a strong focus on individualized case management.

“It’s not a one-size-fits-all for our homeless population,” Hill said. “That case management component is a real central part to ensure that we’re meeting their needs.”

City officials hope to present a replacement program to the city council for approval as soon as possible.
