A missing Nebraska man was found dead in a chimney a month after a tenant heard someone calling for help only for the voice to stop after 911 was called.
On Sept. 16, a resident of an apartment building in Norfolk heard mysterious screams for help and told police it sounded like the sounds were coming from the first floor. After two police officers arrived, the resident told them the screams had just stopped several minutes earlier. Police told them to call back if the screams resumed.
“The responding officers also had contact with three additional residents, including the apartment beneath the reporting party, and no other person heard the yelling,” police said in a news release. “There was a loud television playing in an apartment that officers checked with.”
Last week, a body was discovered inside the chimney of the building after a maintenance worker investigating a foul odor and dripping blood broke through a wall in the basement, McClatchy News reported.
The deceased person was identified as 29-year-old Zachariah Andrews. He was identified by scars, marks, tattoos, and an identification card, police said.
Andrews had been last seen Sept. 15 about two miles north of the apartment building and was reported missing by family earlier this month. His car was found around the corner from the apartment building four days after the police were initially called.
No other information about how Andrews ended up in the chimney was released.
