Miami-Dade County announces first-ever Metro Express service to South Dade on October 27 | Biscayne Bay Tribune#

The new Bus Rapid Transit System along the South Dade TransitWay
is the longest all-electric service in the nation.

Miami-Dade County will make history soon by launching Metro Express — the County’s first-ever Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and the longest all-electric BRT service in the nation, designed to transform how thousands of Miami-Dade residents move along the busy US-1 corridor. Starting on October 27, 2025, the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) will offer South Dade commuters access to a brand-new, comfortable and reliable transit connection from Florida City to Dadeland South.

To commemorate the occasion, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and DTPW leadership, along with the Board of County Commissioners, state and federal officials, partners, and stakeholders, will celebrate with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, October 22nd at one of the 14 new signature BRT stations.

“Metro Express will transform the way South Dade moves by connecting residents with an easier, greener and smarter service to key destinations including job centers, schools, parks, shopping areas and other transit services,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “I am proud to welcome a new era of public transportation, where sustainability meets efficiency and technology powers every ride. The South Dade TransitWay brings smarter infrastructure to make the daily commute more convenient, meeting today’s needs and tomorrow’s growth.”

Stretching 20 miles along US-1 down to Florida City, Metro Express will run on a dedicated lane protected by gate arms, and prioritized during rush hour, to ensure an efficient and safe ride from beginning to end.

“The Metro Express BRT service was designed for safety and efficiency at every touchpoint.” said DTPW Director and CEO, Stacy L. Miller, P.E. “Level boarding, clear wayfinding, well-lit platforms, and traffic signal priority make trips safer and simpler. This is a modern transit experience built to transform the way we move.”

At the heart of the new Metro Express service are 14 new signature BRT stations, which offer amenities such as air-conditioned waiting areas to provide comfort and protection from the elements, a modern design with ample shade, bike friendly boarding and storage, water fountains, free Wi-Fi, and charging stations for mobile devices. All amenities combined, plus the ability to pay before you board, deliver a new enhanced experience for Metro Express passengers.

The project was funded with a $100 million investment by each of the partnering agencies: Miami-Dade County through the People’s Transportation half penny surtax, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) through its capital investment grant.

Developed as part of the SMART Program, Metro Express reflects Miami-Dade County’s long-term commitment to modern, sustainable infrastructure.
