SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Officials will be holding a public meeting Thursday night on a proposed toll hike on the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District said it wants to raise the bridge tolls because it would help address a $220 million shortfall that it expects over the next five years. The board of directors voted to solicit the public’s opinion at a virtual meeting being held tonight at 7 p.m.

The bridge tolls supply a majority of the District’s revenue, officials said, and two-thirds of the annual income goes toward maintaining and operating the bridge itself. The other part of the fees goes toward operating the Golden Gate bus and ferry transit services.

There are four proposals for the price hike over the next five years. Each option shows the price hikes would raise more than $100 million at the end of the five-year span. The price hike range goes from $0.35 up to $0.50, and they would raise each year for the next five years, starting July 2024. Some options end with tolls being as high as $12 after the five-year increase.

The current toll is $8.75 for most FasTrak travelers.

Details on joining the 7 p.m. virtual meeting on Thursday can be found on the Golden Gate district website.
