Maryland State Police arrested a man for DUI after a crash injured a state trooper.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — A man was arrested Thursday morning after a crash during a traffic stop that trapped a state trooper between the stopped car and the trooper car, Maryland State Police said.

The state trooper that conducted the traffic stop originally stopped a blue Lincoln on the inner loop of I-495 near Route 1. During the stop, a second trooper parked directly behind the first trooper’s vehicle. Both cars had their emergency lights on.

The first officer was standing behind the Lincoln when a silver Dodge Charger hit the rear end of the second trooper’s vehicle. This set the second trooper’s car to crash into the back of the first trooper’s car and send the first trooper’s car into the back of the Lincoln. The first trooper was trapped between the Lincoln and his state trooper vehicle. The officer was able to free himself.

The first trooper was transported to University of Maryland Capital Regional Medical Center. He has since been released. The second trooper was not injured.

The driver of the Dodge Charger was identified as Damien Arnold Haman, 42, from Fort Meade, Maryland. He was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and negligent driving. Haman was transported to Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center. He has also been released from the hospital but was then transported to Prince George’s County Department of Corrections.

The identity of the first trooper has not been released. It is also not known if the driver in the blue Lincoln sustained any injuries or why the driver was stopped.

The crash investigation is still active and ongoing.
