Today marks the 70th Anniversary of the Death of Irene Mountbatten, Marchioness of Carisbrooke, who passed away on this day in 1956! The Earl’s daughter married Queen Victoria’s grandson and was the sister-in-law of Queen Ena of Spain, the Marchioness often wore this striking Diamond Sautoir!

When Lady Irene Denison married the former Prince Alexander of Battenberg, the eldest son of Princess Beatrice, in 1917, two days after he relinquished his German Princely Title and a few months before being created the Marquess of Carisbrooke, she received a ‘long flexible chain of diamonds, the gift of the King and Queen of Spain’. Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain was Prince Alexander’s sister.
Lady Irene wore the Diamond Chain on her Wedding Day, for the ceremony at the Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace in London in 1917, in the midst of the First World War.
Her ornaments consisted of a long chain of diamonds, the gift of the King and Queen of Spain, and a large spray of diamonds, an heirloom in the bridegroom’s family.
The Marchioness of Carisbrooke wore the Diamond Chain for a portrait taken with Queen Victoria Eugenie shortly after the end of the First World War, paired with the Princess of Battenberg’s Diamond Corsage.
The Diamond Chain was also worn by Marchioness of Carisbrooke for another portrait in the early 1920s before disappearing from public view.
The Marchioness of Carisbrooke reset various jewels, and it is possible that her Diamond Chain could have been created into a spectacular Diamond Sautoir which was often worn in the 1930s.
Lady Carisbrooke wore the Diamond Sautoir with Queen Victoria’s Strawberry Leaf Tiara at the 1938 State Opening of Parliament.
The following year, the Marchioness of Carisbrooke wore the Diamond Sautoir with an Emerald Pendant paired with Queen Victoria’s Strawberry Leaf Tiara for a Gala Performance at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden during a 1939 State Visit from France.
While various other jewels had been sold off, the Marchioness of Carisbrooke retained the Diamond Sautoir follwoing the Second World War and notably wore it for a Reception in aid of the Royal School of Needlework at St James’ Palace in London in 1951. The fate of the Diamond Sautoir is unknown but it was likely broken up and sold off.
