(KRON) – A Burning Man festival goer flagged down the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office after finding a man lying in a “pool of blood” on Saturday in Black Rock City, Nevada.
The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) responded to the campsite and located a deceased white man lying on the ground as the infamous statue of “the Man” burned at the festival.
The BLM, PCSO and Burning Man Project Black Rock Rangers established a perimeter around the scene of the fatality and began investigating. Law enforcement interviewed several festival participants around the area where the dead male was discovered, according to the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office.
In a press release, the sheriff’s office stated, “the portion of the ‘City’ where this occurred will have a heavy law enforcement presence until the scene can be released.”
The identity of the deceased is unknown at this time and this appears to be a single act of crime, according to the sheriff’s office.
Burning Man organizers released a statement Sunday afternoon regarding the incident.
“The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a single white adult male that occurred the night of Saturday, August 30 in Black Rock City. Burning Man is cooperating with law enforcement,” Burning Man wrote in a statement. The investigation is ongoing and the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office will be the primary source of further information. If you are in Black Rock City, do not interfere with law enforcement activity.”
The full statement can be viewed here, as well as other resources, should a Burning Man participant need access to the internet or contact a loved one.
Officials urge those at Burning Man to be aware and careful of their surroundings while attending the festival.
