Man dies in NJ after shootout with Jersey City police, state and city officials say

A man was shot and killed by Jersey City police Friday after firing a weapon at civilians and officers, according to city and state officials.

Shortly after 1 p.m. city officials said a man began firing a weapon near Clinton Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard on Jersey City’s West Side. As he approached a marked police vehicle, he began firing at officers as well, according to Mayor Steve Fulop’s office.

Surveillance video obtained by PIX 11 shows the man approaching police, an officer recoiling and then aiming his weapon at the assailant, who rushed towards the officer. The video — the contents of which was corroborated by Gothamist with city officials — then shows three officers subduing the man after a tussle.

“The perpetrator was transported to a local hospital,” said city spokesperson Kim Wallace-Scalcione. “No civilians were injured during the incident.”

The officers were taken to a hospital as well, but did not sustain serious injuries, Wallace-Scalcione said.

According to the state Attorney General’s office, the assailant later died as a result of his injuries. His identity has not been released and it’s unclear what kind of weapon he was using.

The AG’s office opened an investigation as it does with every police shooting.
