A 64-year-old man was arrested in the fatal stabbing of another man on Thanksgiving Day near a migrant camp in Denver, Colo., authorities said Friday.
Gido Izquierdo-Ortega, 64, was arrested after he was medically cleared of any injuries. Izquierdo-Ortega had been taken to the hospital on Thursday following an altercation with a group of immigrants.
Denver Police Department officers said they received a call late Thursday morning regarding a stabbing near Park Avenue West and Lawrence St. When police arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from an apparent stab wound.
That man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead at 11:26 a.m.
Surveillance footage and witness cellphone videos seen by police reportedly show Izquierdo-Ortega approaching a group, taking out a knife, and threatening people with it. The suspect can then be seen stabbing one member of the group who tried to intervene.
Several bystanders in the area “began an effort to subdue Izquierdo-Ortega, eventually rendering him unconscious,” police said in a news release.
He was later taken to the hospital and, once cleared by doctors, arrested him on suspicion of first-degree murder.
One witness told investigators that Izquierdo-Ortega was yelling at her and her group because they were immigrants from Venezuela, the Denver Post reported.
