A Texas man was arrested in California this week after he allegedly vandalized a menorah display near Los Angeles.

Beverly Hills police responded to reports of a “suspect defacing a menorah” at a private property around 8 p.m. local time on Sunday night. The man was taken into custody and security video showed the suspect throwing objects believed to be rocks at a menorah, kicking over lights and carving a rudimentary “SS” into the display’s base.

Sunday was the first night of Hanukkah.

Eric Brian King, a 47-year-old Dallas resident, was charged with felony vandalism and a hate crime and is being held on $20,000 bail. Additional charges could be filed.

“A despicable act such as this will never be tolerated in our City,” Police Chief Mark G. Stainbrook said in a statement.

Beverly Hills mayor Lili Bosse decried the vandalism on Twitter.

“What this despicable ‘human being’ needs to know is that OUR light will only shine BRIGHTER! Hate will NEVER win over light,” she wrote.

According to the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, antisemitic hate crimes are up this year in several major cities, including in New York and Los Angeles.

In New York, 260 antisemitic hate crimes were reported in the city between Jan. 1 and Dec. 1.

The Biden administration announced last week it was forming a task force to fight antisemitism in light of high-profile incidents of antisemitism involving high-profile public figures, including former president Donald Trump who had rapper Ye and Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes for dinner at Mar-a-lago in November.
