(FOX40.COM) — A late-night traffic stop in Tuolumne County on Monday developed into a sheriff’s deputy shooting a suspect, according to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office.

At 11:05 p.m., the deputy conducted a traffic stop in the community of Groveland on Merrell Road near Harper Road for an “unreadable plate.”

As the deputy made contact with the two men inside the vehicle one of the men fled on foot.

During the foot pursuit, the suspect reportedly pulled out a firearm and a shooting then took place.

The sheriff’s office is still investigating the shooting and is asking the public to avoid the area.
