Man accused of using motel room as drug lab

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Siletz man was arrested after police say they discovered he was operating a drug lab out of Newport motel room on Wednesday.

Keith Kelly, 36, was booked into Lincoln County Jail on Oct. 29 and faces charges of unlawful manufacture of a schedule I controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, and felon in possession of a restricted weapon.

As part of an ongoing investigation into the illegal manufacture of dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, Lincoln City Police executed a search warrant for the hotel room Kelly had been living in at the Newport Inn.

Once inside the room, detectives found a switchblade style knife, brown powder substances, brown plant substances consistent with DMT ingredients, glass bowls with dried brown residue, and packaging materials, according to court documents.

Kelly’s vehicle was also searched, and officers found a large mixing bowl containing several pounds of a brown substance that appeared to be similar to those seen in the DMT extraction process.

Investigators also said they found evidence that Kelly manufactured the substance in Newport and transported it to Washington for sale, according to court documents.

In a press release posted to Facebook, the police department said they found about 5 pounds of the substance in total, which they believed to be the drug DMT at various stages in the extraction process.

Kelly was arraigned on Oct. 30. His next court appearance is set for Nov. 6.
