SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Summer is here and families across western Massachusetts are firing up their grills. American Medical Response (AMR) is issuing a reminder to practice safe grilling.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), U.S. fire departments are called to more than 11,000 home fires annually involving grills. These incidents result in an average of two deaths, 176 injuries, and $172 million in property damage each year.
Children under five are particularly vulnerable, accounting for approximately 46% of burn injuries related to grills. AMR stresses the importance of keeping a close watch on young children around grilling areas.
To ensure a safe cookout season, AMR offers the following safety tips:
- Choose a Safe Location: Set up your grill away from children, pets, and any flammable objects.
- Keep It Clean: Regularly remove excess grease and residue from the grill to prevent flare-ups.
- Be Prepared: Have a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.
- Use Proper Tools: Utilize long-handled tongs and spatulas with heat-resistant handles to avoid burns.
- Stay Vigilant: Never leave a grill unattended while it is in use.
Additionally, AMR advises grill users to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Each grill model has specific guidelines and restrictions, which are crucial for safe operation.
By following these precautions, everyone can enjoy their summer barbecues while minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries.
