LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – Thousands of children across the region participated in the annual Halloween festivities, trick-or-treating in neighborhoods like Greenacre Avenue in Longmeadow.

The tradition on Greenacre Avenue is more than just a holiday celebration; it is a tribute to Maggie Brace, a beloved resident who started the tradition of carving unique pumpkins and displaying them around her home.

“I think it’s a really great privilege these days that we can offer kids a town that’s really safe and everybody is embracing,” said Jill Strain of Longmeadow.

Maggie Brace, who passed away earlier this year, was known for her love of Halloween and her creative pumpkin designs that became a hallmark of the Greenacre Avenue celebration.

“I moved here about ten years ago, and Maggie was a legend, so people came and looked at her pumpkins, and more people came, and that spirit kind of came on and it lives on because of Maggie,” said Beth Benzaquin of Longmeadow.

Brace’s family continues to honor her memory by maintaining the tradition, and neighbors have embraced the spirit she fostered this Halloween, lighting up the neighborhood for the night.

Parents reminded trick-or-treaters to prioritize safety, emphasizing the importance of staying together and trusting their instincts.

Lucy Dalessil of Longmeadow emphasized, “Nobody get separated, have a buddy, and also trust your gut and call them if you need anything.”

Dentists recommend that after indulging in Halloween candy, children should have a dental checkup to spot early cavities and protect gum health.

The Halloween tradition on Greenacre Avenue continues to bring joy to the community, honoring the legacy of Maggie Brace while ensuring a safe and festive environment for all participants.
