The latest U.S. hospital rankings are out, recognizing several facilities on Long Island.
Both U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service, or CMS, and U.S. News and World Report have released their rankings. The lists are among those designed to help consumers compare health systems to determine the best healthcare decisions for their families.
In the federal rating, five Long Island hospitals scored as top performers, earning five stars from CMS. These hospitals include Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson and Huntington Hospital. Also earning top scores were NYU Langone Health’s hospitals, including its Mineola location, as well as Catholic Health’s St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center in Roslyn.
These Long Island facilities were among 483 hospitals earning five stars.
“Northwell Health analyzes the results of each hospital’s CMS report each year, internalizes them, course corrects where needed and strives to reach higher,” Michael Dowling, Northwell’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “I’m proud to say this was our best showing yet as a health system. Three CMS five-star hospitals on Long Island alone proves our commitment to quality care and excellent outcomes, from the environmental service workers and cooks to our nurses and clinicians.”
“We are grateful for this recognition, which is testament to the unwavering dedication of our entire staff to providing one consistently high standard of care across all NYU Langone hospitals, which have maintained 5-star ratings for the past four years,” Steve Ritea, an NYU Langone spokesperson, said in a statement to LIBN.
“At St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center, we take great pride in providing our patients with the highest level of care possible,” St. Francis Hospital President Dr. Charles Lucore said in a statement to LIBN. “We are honored to receive a 5-star ranking from CMS, for the fourth year in a row. Our clinicians work diligently to ensure that our patients receive care that is of superior quality and safety standards. We were the first hospital on Long Island to receive this five-star ranking.”
In its ratings, CMS produces a hospital summary score that measures mortality, safety, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care. Many of these measures are used by other programs, including Medicare’s Hospital Value-Based Purchasing Program, which rewards acute care hospitals with incentive payments based on the quality of delivered care.
Receiving four stars were Stony Brook University Hospital, Catholic Health’s St. Catherine Of Siena Hospital in Smithtown and St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, and Northwell’s Glen Cove Hospital.
U.S News released its “Best Hospital” rankings on the heels of the CMS scores. In the U.S News’ “Honor Roll,” Northwell’s North Shore University Hospital and NYU Langone Health’s hospitals, including its Mineola location, were recognized as top hospitals in the United States. The two Long Island-based facilities were among a total of four in the state tying for first.
“Every day, I see the amazing care our team delivers to our patients and that is reflected in these impressive rankings,” Dowling said.
For its 2023 Honor Roll, U.S. News did not publish ordinal ranking as it has in the past. The publication said that the ordinal ranking “obscures the fact that all of the Honor Roll hospitals have attained the highest standard of care in the nation.” This year’s format was based on an analysis of how consumers use the site and on industry feedback.
However, as Ritea pointed out, the new format may not give consumers the full picture.
“While we are honored by this accolade, U.S. News no longer publishes numeric rankings for the country’s top-performing hospitals or meaningful rankings in major regional markets, limiting patients’ access to that data,” Ritea said.
Ordinal rankings are continuing for specialties, procedures and conditions. NYU Langone earned top 10 rankings in 10 specialties, including ranking No. 1 in the country for neurology and neurosurgery for the second year in a row. In procedures and conditions, NYU Langone “earned the highest level of performance among a small group of top hospitals nationally, with 20 of 21 of those rated ‘high performing,’” Ritea said.
Amid those specialty services rankings, three Northwell specialties were ranked in the top 10. North Shore was ranked No. 10 in both orthopedics as well as pulmonary and lung surgery, while Lenox Hill was ranked No. 10 for heart and vascular surgery. Systemwide, 31 Northwell specialty programs received rankings.
Meanwhile, consumers can find detailed information from other organizations, including CMS, as well as from Vizient and Leapfrog Group, Ritea said.
“The public should have full access to rankings like those released by U.S. News in order to ensure patients always know where they will receive the best outcomes,” Ritea said.
Across Long Island, seven additional facilities were recognized as top hospitals in the state. Those facilities include St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, which tied for No. 6; Huntington Hospital, at No. 7; South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, at No 12; Stony Brook Hospital at no. 13 and Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital and Plainview Hospital, at No. 29.
The rankings are a source of pride for hospitals.
“These recognitions are a testament to our team and their exceptional work, which is raising the bar of care for patients and their families on Long Island,” Lucore said.
