AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Tuesday, October 7th, marks two years since Hamas launched its attack on Israel.
The Jewish community in western Massachusetts gathered to commemorate the anniversary, with events held at Temple Beth El in Springfield and the Jewish Community of Amherst.
Rabbi Amy Walk of Temple Beth El stated, “In the Jewish world, we talk about before October 7th and after October 7th. First of all, there’s been an unleashing of antisemitism throughout the world that feels unimaginable, but it’s very imaginable.”
Rabbi Walk emphasized the ongoing impact of the attack, noting that members of the temple feel they cannot fully commemorate the event because they are still experiencing its effects. Walk adds, “What I hope is that all Jews, regardless, can stand with the people of Israel.”
Award-winning journalist and author Yardena Schwartz attended the event at Temple Beth El. She recently published ‘Ghosts of a Holy War,’ a book about the 1929 massacre in Palestine that ignited the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Schwartz expressed her hope that readers will understand the historical significance of past events and their relation to current issues.
