Live updates: Israel strikes Lebanon and Gaza after rocket attacks; tensions soar

Here’s what else to know:

  • There was a tense quiet and a heavy Israeli police presence ahead of Friday prayers in Jerusalem’s Old City. Law enforcement said they had earlier dispersed some Palestinians there for allegedly throwing stones.
  • On Thursday, 34 rockets from Lebanon targeted northern Israel, most of which were intercepted by Israel’s aerial defense system, according to the IDF. It said early Friday that 44 rockets had been launched from Gaza overnight, most of which were also intercepted.
  • No group claimed responsibility for the rockets fired toward Israel from south Lebanon, parts of which are controlled by Hezbollah. Lebanon’s defense minister said that the recent escalation “represents a direct threat to security and stability in the south” and that the country’s military was working with U.N. peacekeepers to maintain order.
