“For decades, these partnerships have provided fire protection, emergency medical
response, and law enforcement services to the residents of Live Oak,” the City of Live Oak, Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, and Sutter County Fire said in a joint statement. “The decision marks a significant change in how public safety services will be delivered within the city.”
Live Oak cited financial obstacles for the decision to cut ties. However, Sutter County officials expressed concern regarding the impact of this transition on both residents and regional resources.
“I am disappointed to hear city officials have elected to cancel these services but it is my
understanding this decision is a financial one and not based on the quality of the services
being provided by the Sheriff’s Office,” said Sutter County Sheriff Brandon Barnes. “Whatever the future of public safety looks like for the City of Live Oak, my office will ensure
a smooth transition of those services.”
The Sutter County Fire Department also expressed concerns.
“While I understand the significant financial challenges facing the City of Live Oak, I want to
express my deep concern regarding the implications of this cancellation for public safety,
operation continuity, and the well-being of both our residents and emergency personnel,”
said Richard Epperson, interim Fire Chief for Sutter County.
Sutter County will continue to provide contracted services to Live Oak until November 2026. Residents with questions or concerns can contact the City of Live Oak.
