BHP has lowered its production outlook for some metals, including nickel, echoing other large miners.

The biggest mining company in the world said that total copper output was higher in the first nine months of the year and maintained its full year outlook despite lowering guidance at its Escondida mine in Chile, due to a higher performance at its Olympic Dam site in South Australia.

Wet weather affected its coal operations, the company said.

Mike Henry, chief executive, said recent engagements with customers in China and India had “reaffirmed our positive outlook for commodity demand”, helping to offset slowing growth in the US, Japan and Europe.
