Lincoln City man arrested after 3-hour standoff in the ocean

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A Lincoln City man was captured by authorities after a three-hour standoff in the ocean for a series of restraining order violations, authorities announced.

The night of October 28, the Lincoln City Police Department started an investigation into alleged restraining order violations involving 44-year-old Jaret Reynolds.

According to probable cause documents, Reynolds is accused of calling and texting his ex-wife, her family and her friend despite an active restraining order preventing him from contacting her.

Officers with the Lincoln City Police Department tried to arrest Reynolds at his home. However, officials said he resisted arrest and police left the area due to safety concerns, court documents claim.

The next day, Oct. 29, police found Reynolds walking on the beach in front of Mo’s Restaurant, court documents allege. However, after police tried to arrest him, Reynolds, “an experienced swimmer with an extensive history of violence,” ran towards the ocean and started swimming to avoid arrest.

The standoff lasted approximately three hours, authorities said, with Reynolds swimming in the Siletz Bay, briefly churning into the Pacific Ocean, and refusing authorities’ requests to exit the water.

During the standoff, police said Reynolds pulled away from authorities and at times swam underneath patrol boats to avoid arrest.

Members of the Lincoln City Police Department, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department and Oregon State Police eventually captured Reynolds, brought him to shore and arrested him on numerous charges including resisting arrest, improper use of an emergency reporting system, telephonic harassment, criminal mischief, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and theft.

According to court documents, Reynolds pleaded not guilty to all charges.
