RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — A Wake County middle school has resumed classes on Tuesday after an alleged threat prompted an evacuation.
Around 11:30 a.m., the staff at Ligon Magnet Middle School sent an email to parents alerting them to what was going on and saying that the students were safe.
Families, This is an urgent message. Students are safe. Due to a potential threat, we have evacuated all students and staff to allow WCPSS Security and law enforcement to assess the building and investigate. The Raleigh Police Department and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search of the campus and buildings during the evacuation. Once the search was done, they turned the campus back over to Ligon school leaders.
The school updated the situation around 1:02 p.m., posting this message:
Families,
All students are safe. WCPSS Security and law enforcement have cleared the rest of our building and determined there is no threat to our school. We will continue with the school day in our gym and will be providing food to all students who did not receive lunch during the first two periods.
Parents who wish to pick up their students early should follow the carpool line into the parking lot on Church Street and bring your identification. Students being picked up early will leave from the gym. If you choose to check your student out early, you should anticipate delays due to increased traffic around our campus.
Due to the expected increase in the number of students who will check out early, we are minimizing transitions in our building for the remainder of the school day. Student belongings will remain in locked classrooms this evening and they will retrieve them during arrival tomorrow morning.
I would like to thank our students, staff, and families for their calm response during today’s incident. I am proud of how cooperative and helpful students and staff have been throughout the event. I would also like to thank our partners in law enforcement and WCPSS Security for their continued support in keeping our students and staff safe.
Please reach out to our front office if you have questions.
