Laurel police seek surveillance video, public help after 40+ car break-ins

Police urge vigilance and video footage submission after more than 40 car break-ins.

LAUREL, Md. — Broken glass, angry neighbors, and dozens of police reports.

“Over the weekend, Saturday night into Sunday morning, we had just about 45 cars so far that we’ve taken reports on that were broken into in our community,” said Laurel Police Chief Russ Hamill.

Hamill says whoever is responsible hit cars off Ashford Blvd, Oxford Drive, Laurel Lakes Court, and Harvest Bend Lane.

Police are asking neighbors to take protective measures – like locking doors, removing valuables, and installing extra lighting around the house.

If you already have a surveillance camera, they’re asking you to submit video from the weekend as they investigate.

“People can download video on our QR code,” said Hamill, “Our detectives can look through it and see if there is any information that may be helpful to us.”

Neighbors say they’d like to see additional patrolling now, plus stiffer penalties for whoever is caught. Chief Hamill agrees.

“Hope that our partners in the criminal justice system understand the seriousness of this,” said Chief Hamill, “People who do these acts need to be held responsible.”
