Now, we don’t know about you, but Lana Del Rey is one of the THP team’s all-time favorite artists. There is just something about her dreamy yet melancholic vibe that never fails to make us feel like we’re inside a movie. We just simply cannot get enough of her discography. So, when we saw that Lana was finally back with ‘Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd,’ you can imagine how excited we were.

On the 7th of December, Lana decided to grace her fans with a surprise album announcement and the release of its titular single, both titled Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd. This surprise new release is everything we could possibly want from a Lana Del Rey single and we will be adding it to every playlist we make from now on.

‘Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd’ is a quintessential Lana song, featuring slow-paced instrumentation whilst discussing the passage of time and not wanting to fall into irrelevancy? This song is perfect for any fans of Taylor Swift’s ‘Nothing New’ with Pheobe Bridgers, discussing similar themes like the fear of being forgotten or replaced by something new.

Lana uses the lyrics to draw comparisons between herself and Jergins Tunnel, the once revered tunnel under Ocean Boulevard that has been forgotten and fallen into disuse. Lana begs the listeners to not let her meet the same fate as the Jergins Tunnel, asking them to ‘Open me up, tell me you like it.’

The song makes multiple references to artists and songs from the 70s throughout the lyrics, including The Beatles’ John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, and Eagles’ iconic ‘Hotel California.’ Lana’s general aesthetic is often quite nostalgic and retro, so her affinity for and references to the 70s are unsurprising. Plus, since the Jergins Tunnel was closed at the end of the 60s, it makes sense that Lana chooses to reference the 70s throughout the lyrics.

Lana has been teasing a new album release for quite some time, with her manager hinting at its completion back in August and Lana herself discussing the writing process back in May. However, while we may not have gotten an album from Lana in over a year, she has released ‘Watercolor Eyes’ from the Euphoria soundtrack and featured on our new favorite Taylor Swift song, ‘Snow On The Beach.’ As much as we adore both of these releases, we are extremely excited to be getting a new Lana album and will definitely be counting down the days until its release.

Both the single and the album were produced by Jack Antonoff, Lana’s longtime friend who has also produced masterpieces such as Lorde’s last two albums: Solar Power and Melodrama. The album is set to release on March 10th and follows on from her critically acclaimed eighth album, Blue Banisters. The Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd album will be sixteen tracks long and we have a sneaking suspicion that there will not be a single skip.
