PADUCAH, Ky. —The Paducah Police Department is mourning the loss of Sgt. Ryan Hudson, who died unexpectedly after falling ill during a shift in which he supervised the response to a deadly nightclub shooting, KFVS reported.
Paducah Police Chief Brian Laird said during a news conference on Aug. 15 that Sgt. Hudson, 32, was among the supervisors at the scene of the recent shooting that killed a pregnant woman and injured two others, according to the report. Hudson reportedly began feeling unwell during his shift but continued working until he became too ill to finish and returned home.
His condition worsened over the weekend, and he was admitted to the hospital on Aug. 11. He died on Aug. 12. An underlying cardiac condition, reportedly triggered by the stress of responding to the violent incident, was determined to be the cause of death.
Laird said Hudson had an “outstanding career” and was a fast learner. He served with the department for 10 years.
In response, the department has launched an employee support fund.

“This is proof that people want to be cops again,” Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. “It shows that this profession is back in a big way.”
