The Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade, one of South Florida’s most active community service organizations, recently presented a total of $10,000 in college scholarships to 10 local high school seniors.
“Being able to help students fulfill their dream of attending college is an incredible experience,” said Mia DeVane, head of the club’s Scholarship Committee. “When we assist the future leaders of tomorrow to attend college or a trade school, it is an investment in the future of the South Dade community.”
The 10 college-bound seniors, who represented seven high schools throughout the Homestead/South Dade area, received their recognition at the Villages of Homestead Clubhouse. Nearly 60 people, including proud parents, attended the ceremony.
The winners — selected from a record 21 applications — are Ajay Evans (Charter School of the Americas); Jasmine Williams (School for Advance Studies); Anya Gordon and Joshua Bonilla (Keys Gate Charter); Ashton Gary, Samantha Garcia and Isaac Crissien (Coral Reef), A’Mira Griffiths (Robert Morgan), Kiara Vargas (Center for International Education), and Ray Garcia (MAST Academy Homestead).
Scholarship winners have been accepted at a wide variety of colleges and universities, including the University of Florida, Florida Atlantic,
University of South Florida, Florida State, Florida International, Andrews University, and Florida Polytechnical University. They will be majoring in such fields as Public Safety Administration, Biology Pre-Med, Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Business, Electrical Engineering, Criminal Justice, Government, Pre-Law and Biological Sciences.
The $10,000 in scholarships included a generous $5,000 matching grant from Florida Power & Light.
