Maryland father Kilmar Abrego Garcia was transferred from Virginia to Pennsylvania amid an ongoing immigration battle with the Trump administration.
WASHINGTON — A Maryland father embroiled in an ongoing immigration tussle involving the Trump administration has been moved from a detention facility in Virginia to one in Pennsylvania.
The move is the latest installment in the saga of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Prince George’s County man who was mistakenly deported to a prison in El Salvador despite a judge ruling that he could remain in the U.S.
Since his return, Abrego Garcia has been in and out of detention facilities as the administration works to have him removed from the country.
In August, he was released from a Tennessee jail ahead of a trial regarding human smuggling charges.
Before being moved to the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Pennsylvania, Abrego Garcia was being held at Farmville Detention Center in Virginia.
Abrego Garcia and his legal team have rejected a number of deportation destinations selected by prosecutors – along with Latin American sites, prosecutors have floated African ones.
Abrego Garcia’s defense team has raised concerns about their access to him at the new detention facility.
“It is not yet clear whether that is true. Travel to Moshannon is far more difficult for the members of the defense team based in Nashville, and is not appreciably easier for the New York-based members of the defense team, compared to Farmville,” a filing by the defense team said.
They’ve also raised concerns about the conditions Abrego Garcia will be subjected to at the Pennsylvania facility.
“Conditions at Moshannon are also deeply concerning—a detainee died by hanging last month, there have been recent reports of assaults, inadequate medical care, and insufficient food, and the Department of Homeland Security abruptly terminated an internal investigation into allegations of excessive force and abuses by guards at the facility,” they said.
