Kari Lake, who is running in Arizona’s gubernatorial race as the Republican nominee, was confronted on Sunday with a reel of Donald Trump‘s former officials debunking claims that the 2020 presidential election was “stolen,” which are statements that she previously touted.

Lake is running against Arizona’s Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, in a state which narrowly backed President Joe Biden in 2020. Hobbs would become the Grand Canyon State’s first Democratic governor in over a decade if she wins in this year’s midterm elections.

During an interview on CNN‘s State of the Union, host Dana Bash asked Lake about her previous claims that the 2020 election was “rigged” before showing Lake a reel of former Trump officials contradicting her.

The clip showed the claims being debunked by former U.S. Attorney General William Barr, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Richard Donoghue and Jeffrey Rosen, former acting U.S. attorney general.

“So these are [former] President Trump’s own top Justice Department officials. Why not believe them?” Bash asked Lake.

Instead of answering the question, Lake deflected and changed the subject to what she described as Hobbs’ “incompetence” during Arizona’s primary election in early August.

Later on in the interview, Bash then asked Lake: “If leaders like you and President Trump are saying that the election was stolen, aren’t you participating, contributing, even causing the idea of people thinking that the election is not safe and secure?”

“No,” Lake responded. “We are going to make sure our elections are safe and secure for Democrats, independents and Republicans alike. We want to know that our legal vote counted. We want to know the winner on election night.”

When Bash asked Lake about why she keeps touting election lies despite the lack of evidence to back such claims, the Republican candidate said that there is “plenty” of evidence that the “media won’t cover.”

However, Bash pushed back, saying that Fox News “covered this extensively, and what you just said has been debunked.” Lake said that the coverage was one-sided and added that “people don’t trust our elections.”

What the Polls Show

Last weekend, Trump attended a rally in Mesa, Arizona, to support Lake who received his endorsement during the Republican primary.

As of Friday, she is ahead of Hobbs by an average of 0.9 percentage points, according to an aggregate poll by FiveThirtyEight .

Meanwhile, another poll by YouGov/CBS News, conducted from September 30 to October 4, revealed that Hobbs and Lake received equal support of 49 percent from respondents. The poll surveyed 1,164 likely voters and had a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.

Newsweek reached out to Trump’s office for comment.
