Justin Bieber has a pair of baggy pants for any and every occasion: He wears them to the Met Gala and the Grammys. He wears them out to brunch at the Hotel Bel-Air. He wears them with a matching crochet-knit blanket on a sushi date night. He wears them with a fur coat in the summertime. He wears them when he’s matching with his wife, and even when he’s not. Hell, even Bieber’s sweatpants are ludicrously capacious.

But while Justin took on the mantle of the giant pants renaissance years ago, he’s thus far managed to slide-step the mother of all spacious trousers: JNCO Jeans, a.k.a. the hyper-wide-leg, goofily oversized denim that swept the floors of every shopping mall food court, all-night rave, and Ozzfest mosh pit in the 1990s.

That is, until now. At long last, Justin Bieber has fulfilled his destiny and acquired a pair of full-bodied JNCOs, featuring the telltale puffy-type JNCO logo on the back pocket. When he wore the pants out in Los Angeles last week, his New Balance 550s just barely peeked out from beneath their hulking hems.

The telltale pockets.

Though JNCO reissued their old-school “Mammoth” jeans (which boast a gargantuan 40-inch leg opening) way back in 2017, the brand has yet to regain its ’90s-level relevancy—which is perhaps slightly surprising, given the fervor with which late-20th-century nostalgia tends to drive trend cycles these days. But the sight of Biebs wearing his JNCOs (at Hollywood’s favorite LA deli Uncle Paulie’s, no less) may be just the celebrity endorsement the hella-baggy, shoe-swallowing pants need to make it back to the big leagues.

Does this mean that you really ought to unearth that old pair of JNCOs, shredded hems and all, from the box you’ve somehow retained while moving between every home you’ve lived in for the last two decades? Well, maybe. Why not! But if the very concept of Gen X’s biggest sartorial bugaboo making a comeback among Zoomers troubles you, just know that it’s too late. The kids are already listening to Deftones. While everyone’s lost, the battle is won.
