(INSIDE CALIFORNIA POLITICS) — Governor Gavin Newsom is moving forward with an effort to redraw congressional maps in California in response to a similar move by Texas lawmakers. Newsom on Thursday called for a special election to be held in November to introduce new U.S. House seats that favor Democrats. The maps would need to be approved by voters because an independent commission currently draws them.
Congressman Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) is among the handful of GOP lawmakers who face an uncertain future if Newsom’s plan is successful. Kiley joined the show to discuss his new legislation that would nullify new maps adopted by states before the 2030 census, including any that are adopted this year. Kiley also alleged Democrats will purposefully make the ballot language confusing for voters.
Host Nikki Laurenzo also sat down with candidate for California governor Stephen J. Cloobeck (D). The hospitality businessman and former CEO of Diamond Resorts spent over $1 million on new TV advertisements targeting President Donald Trump. One of the ads labels President Trump as a cheater, referencing the ongoing redistricting efforts in Texas. Another highlights Trump’s connection to the late convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
Democratic strategist Andrew Acosta and Republican strategist Rob Stutzman also stopped by to provide insight on Cloobeck’s anti-Trump strategy and redistricting efforts in California and Texas.
