Improperly disposed smoking materials spark $150K fire in Mountain View

(KRON) — A fire that spread to a multi-family home in Mountain View on Monday was caused by smoking materials being improperly disposed of in a recycling bin outside, according to fire officials.

The Mountain View Fire Department responded at 4:35 p.m. to a two-story home on the 1100 block of California Street on the report of an active fire. Arriving minutes later, firefighters found that the fire had spread up the side of the house and into the attic.

“The design of the century-old building allowed for flames to quickly spread into the voids and into the second floor of the home,” fire officials said.

To ensure complete extinguishment as they doused the flames, fire crews cut open ceilings, walls and the roof, according to MVFD. Thermal imaging cameras were used to monitor potential flames behind the drywall.

Three residents were displaced due to the fire. No injuries were reported.

“The recycling bin was determined to be the origin of the fire,” officials said. “The cause of the fire was accidental, due to the improper disposal of smoking materials.”

The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in structure damage, according to the fire department.
