A PROFESSIONAL gambler has revealed how he scooped £33million on the lottery.
David Walsh, from Australia, is part of a syndicate with a group of friends who splash out on eye-watering £5billion on bets between them each year.
The 61-year-old said the group spent £6million to buy one million German lottery tickets earlier this year – bagging him a huge jackpot.
And the syndicate – led by business magnate Zeljko Ranogajec – also saw Mr Walsh win £35million on a horse race in Japan on Christmas Eve.
He told investors at the Sohn Hearts and Minds Conference in Hobart, Tasmania that his success is mainly down to one thing – luck, reports Australian Financial Review.
Mr Walsh said: “Finding a system that works and is stable and works for a long time is extremely difficult.
“If you’ve had a system that works for 20 years, it’s not as a result of skill.
“You acquire the system that worked by luck, then once it worked, it might keep working.'”
But Mr Walsh warned failure as a gambler is much more likely than success as around nine in ten people go broke.
He also said that luck also played a huge part in the success of investors.
Mr Walsh told the crowd: “The cohort here is probably a cohort who were mostly successful.
“But there is another cohort [that] would fill a stadium of people, that had similarly realised appropriate strategies, that either overbet them or simply chose strategies that didn’t work in the long run or failed to maintain those strategies.
“But there’s no difference in the level of skill of those that failed and those that succeeded.”
It comes after a man who scooped thousands on the lottery claimed his success was thanks to the unique and random way he picks his numbers.
Michael Jones, 52, won a whopping £22,350 on the Pick 5 lotto draw on October 8 after paying just 45p to play.
The electrician, from Baltimore, Maryland, said he had to do a double-take when he saw his numbers come up during the evening draw.
He played the Pick 4 and Pick 5 games twice a day before his persistence finally paid off.
According to the Maryland State Lottery, he enters more than 200 number combinations in the hopes of securing the jackpot.
Michael credits his dedication to regularly taking a gamble – and his method of picking the digits – for his big windfall.
Meanwhile, an Australian man became a millionaire after making a silly mistake when picking his usual lottery numbers.
He had accidentally marked the wrong section when selecting his usual lotto pick online – bagging him $1million – or just more than £587,000.
