Greetings, fellow pop culture aficionados, and welcome to week 25 of our I.C.Y.M.I. (In Case You Missed It) blog series. Our museum may be temporarily closed to visitors based on guidance from public health officials to slow the spread of coronavirus, but we’re still here to recap a handful of trending tidbits from the past week(s) in popular culture, in case you missed them.

Last week, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift gave the pop culture world a surprise, releasing folklore, her eighth studio album. This week, there’s big news in the music business once again, as MTV announced nominations for its 2020 Video Music Awards. Read on!


MTV Announces Nominees For 2020 Video Music Awards

Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, and The Weeknd are the artists with the most nominations for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, which airs live at 5 p.m. PT on Sunday, August 30.

Awards for the usual categories, including video of the year, artist of the year, song of the year, and more, will be decided on by votes from fans, as will the winners of two new categories MTV created to honor music created during the coronavirus pandemic. Best music video from home and best quarantine performance are on the ballot this year, with a handful of deserving nominees included from the Gaga-curated ‘One World: Together at Home‘ virtual concert event, as well as Post Malone’s livestreamed Nirvana tribute for charity.

HBO’s Watchmen Paces Emmy Nominations

Watchmen, the HBO series based on the DC Comics graphic novel, received a leading 26 nominations for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards this past week. Here’s a complete look at all the nominations. This year’s ceremony with host Jimmy Kimmel is set for Sunday, September 20 on ABC.


GLAAD Media Awards

While the VMAs and Emmys were announcing nominees, GLAAD was handing out awards. The 31st annual ceremony that recognizes and honors media for fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives took place Thursday, July 30 with Lil Nas X, Chloe x Halle, Dolly Parton, and more.
