How we photographed Mayor Brandon Johnson’s budget saga

What makes this photo interesting?

The Chicago City Council’s decision to pass an alternate budget stretched on for several hours-long meetings. On Dec. 19, conservative and moderate alderpersons voted to move an alternate budget forward. Extended arms of journalists clamoring to ask questions and stern glances from alderpersons illustrate the disarray and confusion of the budget process, and add some dynamism to an otherwise standard news conference photo.

How I got this picture

Photographing the City Council is one of the most creatively challenging assignments for me. Photographers are often stuck in a small press box far from alderpersons and unable to move around the room to get different angles until the meeting is over. When City Council members gathered for a news conference to discuss their reaction to the vote, I crouched in front of the television cameras and reporters and waited for the moment when their hands were extended, so I could frame their faces.
