The Hornets are off to an 0-2 start to the season and play in the Big Sky Conference at the FCS level. Mercyhurst is 1-1 and is also an FCS team, playing in the NEC. Neither team has played a conference game yet.

Sacramento State might be winless, but it has to feel good about almost beating an FBS school, Nevada, last week, losing 20-17. The team led 17-13 entering the fourth quarter and held that lead until just over two minutes to play when quarterback Cardell Williams threw a pick-six. It was one of just two incompletions in an otherwise strong game from the QB.

Mercyhurst lost to Youngstown State to open the season before winning 48-14 last weekend in its home opener against New Haven.
