(FOX40.COM) — While trick-or-treating offers kids and families a time to dress up for Halloween and participate in community events, parents must be aware of possible drug-laced candy that kids could be given.

THC and fentanyl laced candy may look like an ordinary chocolate treat or lollipop. The Drug Enforcement Administration released possible signs of drug-laced candy that could be passed out during trick-or-treating.

While marijuana has a distinct and pungent odor, when the active ingredient, THC, is cooked into food, those noticeable characteristics are gone. These fake candies are often professionally packaged and can easily be mistaken for regular candy or baked goods.

The DEA said unusual wrapping, appearance, unusual colors, odd smell, misspelled candy labels, and candy or food that is unwrapped or unmarked are signs that parents should look for if suspecting drug-laced candy.

Parents and caregivers should seek immediate medical attention if a child ingests drug-laced candy and then contact local police.
