Many of us use our garden purely for leisure. However, it’s possible that some of your spare land could be an extra source of income. But how exactly do you make money from spare garden space? This post lists a few possible options. 

Sell your land

One option is to sell off land that you don’t need. This could give you a hefty lump sum of cash to use however you want. Nowadays, there’s a huge demand for spare land – particularly in towns and cities. Such land could be used for residential or commercial purposes.

There are sites you can use online for selling land. Such land should ideally be accessible without having to travel through your home or garden, and it should be large enough that it can actually be put to practical use (ideally 1/12th of an acre or more).

Grow produce to sell

If you’d prefer to make continuous money from your land, why not consider growing your own vegetables and fruit on a patch of unused land?

This is ideal for anyone with a passion for gardening or growing food. Produce can include crops grown in the earth, or in a greenhouse. Alternatively, you could look into other farming options such as keeping chickens, starting a mushroom farm, keeping bees, or even farming worms. All of these options don’t require much space. 

Having a sizeable piece of land will allow you to grow more produce and potentially turn it into a thriving business. For smaller plots of land, you may not be able to make as much income, but it could still be a worthy side hustle for bringing in some extra cash.

Hire out spare garden space for events

Another option could be to hire out land for events. This typically involves a larger plot of land in a prime location. Festivals, fairs, weddings, outdoor cinemas, circuses, markets and business functions are just some of the events you can hire out land for. 

There are websites that you can use to advertise your land for events. It’s important that you keep the land well-maintained; this may include cleaning up after events, although you can request that clients do the cleanup in the contract agreement.

Use spare garden space for camping

A fairly large plot of land can also be turned into a campsite. This could be a great way to make some money in the summer months.

When turning land into a campsite, you might want to make a few improvements such as building a bathroom block, adding some lighting and electrical hook-ups, and possibly even creating designated pitches. The land will need to be well maintained so that it’s suitable for camping on, and marketing your campsite will be important when it comes to attracting customers.

Rent out spare garden space as private allotments

If you own some spare land in a heavily urban area, consider whether it could be beneficial to turn some of it into communal gardening space. There could be many people living in the area who are eager to rent an allotment.

In order for your allotments to be successful, you should make sure that the earth is fertile. Security features such as cameras or fences are also worth adding for peace of mind.

Build property to rent or sell

Another option is to build property on your land to rent or sell. This could be anything from a small office to a large house.

Such a venture will require spending a lot of money upfront. You will need to hire an architect and contractors to design and build the property, and you may need a lawyer to help you write contracts so that your investment is protected. However, you could make a considerable profit in the long run.

Create an office or studio to run your own business from

Got a business idea, but don’t have the space to run it from? You could always build the space you need in your garden. This could include anything from a garden office to a private photography studio or workshop.

Having a purpose-built studio or office away from your home will help you to separate work and home life. You can also invite clients to meetings without having to host them in your home.
