Well the traditional powdered sugar is always going to be a winner, but we love any fruit too. You can add strawberries, pineapples, blueberries.. whatever fruit you desire. You can also use fresh fruit or a pie filling (cherry is really good), either is delicious. Just don’t forget the whipped cream!

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • About 1 1/4 cups cooking oil I used a 10 inch skillet. You need enough oil to make about 1/2 inch deep
  • Whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt until well blended.

  • Add the egg,  milk and vanilla extract.  Mix well with spoon.

  • Heat oil in a skillet to about 360 degrees or until it starts to bubble and boil.

  • Pour 1/2 cup funnel cake mixture through a funnel while holding it over the hot oil and moving the funnel around in a spiral direction.

  • Cook on each side about 1 to 1 1/2 minutes or until golden brown.

  • Remove from skillet and drain on paper towels.

  • This makes about 4 funnel cakes. Always be careful when working with hot oil. You can make them as big or small as you like.

Use tongs when turning over funnel cakes in hot oil.
