Retraining to become a therapist was something I felt very passionate about, and I was determined that the Bowen Technique was the therapy for me. You may have read in my previous post Working from home – Jobs for mums, ideas and resources that the first part of my working from home journey was to retrain to become a Bowen Technique therapist. I was driven by the amazing experience I had received from another therapist when she cured the colic in my one-month-old baby which was truly incredible. Being inspired like that was what lead me to want to help other children and families to eliminate colic from their lives if possible.

So where did I go from here with the Bowen Technique? How was I going to become a therapist?

The first thing I did was to contact a Bowen therapist that my mother-in-law had recommended. He had been practicing for many years. I gave him a call and scheduled a brief chat with him to pick his brains about what I should do next.

He very kindly agreed to speak with me, and we had a very long talk about his Bowen therapy training, where he trained and his incredible experiences as a therapist. Following this conversation, I felt even more inspired to pursue this new amazing career and I then had the details of a fantastic Bowen Technique training school which he had recommended.

Before I continue, I would like to point out that if you wish to become a therapist this change in career does take time, dedication and some investment, although not too much, but if you don’t feel you will be able to commit to these things then maybe you should consider an alternative career paths.

Joining a Bowen Technique course

The duration of a course is usually within 1 year depending on the school

Here are some of the available Bowen technique training schools in the UK:

1. The College of Bowen Studies – www.thebowentechnique.com (this is the one I trained with and highly recommend it)

2. Bowen Training UK – www.bowentraining.co.uk

3. Bowen Therapy UK – www.bowentherapyuk.com

4. Bowen College – www.bowencollege.org.uk

The average course could cost around £2500 in total. This can usually be paid in small chunks through the training so don’t feel too put off by this figure.

Complete additional diplomas and CPD (Continued Professional Development) to boost knowledge.

After you have completed the Bowen therapy training course it is a good idea to increase your knowledge of anatomy and physiology. I completed a diploma in Anatomy and Physiology. This was very useful when clients would ask me questions about how the Bowen technique might work for them and having this extra anatomy knowledge enabled me to explain quite easily how the human body works and how I would expect the clients body to react to the treatment.

There are many incredible courses out there, however your training school should offer recommendations for further study and CPD courses.

Sign up for appropriate insurance BEFORE TREATING ANYONE!!

Insurance for therapists is highly recommended. It can protect your business should a client make a claim against you, and it can also reassure potential clients who are considering using your services that you are a reputable and trustworthy business.

Decide where you will practice Bowen technique, either at home, at the client’s home (mobile therapist) or in a clinic

The great thing about being a complimentary therapist is the flexibility you have to work where and when you want to.

At some point I used all three methods: working from home, visiting clients houses and also I had a fixed base clinic where clients came to me.

One thing I would like to point out is, wherever you decide to work from, please bare in mind your safety at all times. If you are female and providing therapy to men just be cautious before agreeing to visit their house or agreeing to an appointment at your house if you are home alone. Working from a fixed clinic, where other therapists are based can be a good solution for this problem.

Purchase equipment

The school where you receive your training will no doubt offer plenty of advice as to what equipment you will require to set up your therapy business.

If you are going to be a mobile therapist visiting clients you may want to purchase a therapy table that is very easy to carry, for example a light one that folds and can be easily put into a bag.

Decide what you would like to charge your Bowen Technique clients

Do some research on-line to see what other Bowen Therapists in your area are charging. I found that up in The Midlands therapists were charging considerably less compared to those based in central London. You don’t want to price yourself out of the market, so be realistic and only charge what people are prepared to pay. Don’t be greedy or your business will fail. Remember, you are doing this to help people, not to take all their money. Although having said that, you do need to make a living, so find a good middle ground.

Market your Bowen Technique business – website, social media, evening talks to local groups etc.

So you’ve done the training, you’ve got your qualifications and you have bought all the equipment. Now you need to tell everyone about your incredible new business. After you have been practicing for a decent length of time referrals should play a major part in building your business, but obviously to start off you need to gain some new clients.

I headed to my local print shop, where they very quickly put together some business cards and flyers for me to distribute. I set up a website, which was very basic and didn’t need to be complicated. It was purely informational and a way of allowing new clients to contact me.

These days Facebook is perfect for this and doesn’t cost a thing, as well as Instagram and Twitter.

One way I developed my client base was to do talks to local groups such as The Women’s Institute (WI) or u3a (University of the Third Age). I found they very often invite a speaker to their events so it might be worth contacting your local groups. Also visiting local playgroups to talk to parents about the benefits of Bowen may also be a good outlet for new clients. Work on the basis, it’s a numbers game. The more people you speak to, the higher your client numbers will be.

If you decide to go ahead this new career path I wish you all the best and I hope you make a huge success of it.
