India has celebrated the rescue of 41 construction workers who had been trapped in a collapsed tunnel in the Himalayas for 17 days.

The workers were greeted with applause and traditional marigold garlands as they emerged from a steel pipe that had been pushed through the rubble.

Here’s how the rescue operation, which took over 400 hours and was plagued by mishaps, unfolded.
