A preliminary investigation says multiple calls came in for reports of a loud explosion and a house fully engulfed in flames.
WASHINGTON — Crews are on the scene working to put out a fire that later caused a house explosion in Fairfax County.
According to officials, crews were called to 14389 Quail Pond Court for reports of a house fire at 9:47 p.m., Sunday night.
Within 60 seconds, a second alarm was called. A preliminary investigation says multiple calls came in for reports of a loud explosion and a house fully engulfed in flames.
There was one person inside the home at the time of the fire. They were able to get out uninjured.
As crews worked to put the flames out, they discovered there was a gas leak. As of 12:55 a.m., they do not know where the leak is coming from.
Until the leak can be located, officials went door-to-door evacuating residents in the neighborhood. At least 50 houses have been evacuated until Washington Gas can identify the leak.
Officials set up an area for neighbors at the local community center until the leak is contained. In the meantime, the gas has been shut off.
This explosion happened at the same time crews were working to extinguish a large house fire in Chantilly. Fortunately, Fairfax County Fire officials had enough crews to send over to Centreville, Virginia to assist with the flames.
