Fairfax County Public Schools faces a federal probe into alleged antisemitism, examining its compliance with Title 6 to ensure safe, harassment-free environments.
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Fairfax County Public Schools is under the microscope. The House Committee on Education and Workforce announced it’s investigating incidents of antisemitism within the district.
The House Committee on Education and Workforce sent a letter to Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid on Monday. It explains the committee is investigating whether there was or is a hostile environment against Jewish K-12 students in FCPS schools and whether the district is fulfilling its obligation under Title VI.
Title VI requires districts to make sure learning environments are safe and free from harassment.
By December 8, the district must turn over:
- A list of complaints received of students, faculty, or staff related to alleged antisemitic incidents and the district’s response.
- All documents and communications since October 7, 2023, referring or relating to Jews, Judaism, Israel, Palestine, or Zionism, in the possession of FCPS schools or offices.
- All documents and communications referring or relating to contracts or agreements involving FCPS since January 1, 2022, that refer to Jews, Judaism, Israel, Palestine, Zionism, or antisemitism.
The letter cited multiple allegations over the last three years, including students allegedly making offensive gestures at Jewish students and the recent video posted by the Muslim Student Association that included mock kidnapping scenes.
“We’re always glad when elected officials and other leaders shine a spotlight on antisemitism and other forms of hatred that are manifesting in K-12 spaces,” said Guila Franklin Siegel, Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington.
Franklin Siegel is the Chief Operating Officer for the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington. Franklin Siegel says her organization has worked closely with Fairfax County Public Schools to address complaints of antisemitism. She believes FCPS has made progress — but agrees there’s always room to continue to improve.
“Dr. Reid, the superintendent at FCPS, has been public about her commitment to being responsive to concerns and needs of Jewish students and employees, and families. I think the tone needs to be set from the top,” said Franklin Siegel.
Fairfax County Public Schools confirmed receipt of the letter and said it intends to comply with the investigation.
In a statement saying, “Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has received a letter from Congressman Walberg, Chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, requesting information about potential antisemitic incidents occurring within FCPS schools since 2022. FCPS intends to fully cooperate with Congressman Walberg’s inquiry. FCPS continues to partner with all families to provide a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment for all students and staff members.”
