Honda is recalling more than 300,000 Accords and HRVs from 2023 to 2024 because of a potential front seatbelt defect.
There’s a piece missing in the front seat belt pretensioners, which could increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash, the company stated. Pretensioners are the gadgets that tighten seatbelts upon impact, and the rivet key to its operation may be missing in the recalled models, Honda explained. If it doesn’t work, a rider might not be properly restrained, the company said.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said the error was made during assembly, when “front seat belt pretensioners were assembled without a rivet securing the quick connector and wire plate,” according to the recall report.
Honda said it has not received any reports of injuries or deaths related to the missing part. The company had received seven warranty claims as of Nov. 16. The rivets may not all be missing, Honda stated.
“The recall population was determined based on manufacturing records,” the company added. “The production range reflects all possible vehicles that could experience the problem.”
Dealers will inspect potentially defective cars and replace the pretensioner part for free. People who have already footed the bill for the repair could be eligible for reimbursement. Fewer than 1% of the potentially affected vehicles will need to have the apparatus replaced, Honda said.
Affected owners will receive notification letters via registered mail, which will go out Jan. 8. Consumers can get inspected any time at an authorized Honda dealer, a spokesman said.
