Hikers stranded on Point Reyes cliff rescued by helicopter

(KRON) — Two people who became stuck on a steep cliff along the Point Reyes National Seashore coastline on Sunday were rescued by a California Highway Patrol helicopter after dark.

The Marin County Fire Department requested the assistance of CHP’s H-30 helicopter at around 7 p.m. after learning that two female hikers were trapped on a seaside cliff south of Pelican Lake, according to officials.

“The crew of H-30 responded and were able to locate the parties along an extremely steep rock formation,” CHP said.

The H-30 crew made a one-skid landing to drop off a paramedic on the cliff. The paramedic contacted the hikers and got them in position for rescue. H-30 returned to the cliff’s edge, where everyone was loaded into the helicopter.

The rescued individuals were flown to an awaiting ambulance for treatment, officials said.

“When hiking, always prepare for changing weather conditions as well as give yourself plenty of time for safe return before darkness,” CHP said.
