Seven years after taking a ski trip with her family to Park City, Utah, Gwyneth Paltrow returned to the destination for a less enjoyable reason. She appeared in court on Tuesday for a civil trial brought on by a lawsuit from retired optometrist Terry Sanderson.

Sanderson previously accused Paltrow of running into him as she went down a hill at Deer Valley Resort in 2016 and then skiing away. The 2019 lawsuit alleges that Sanderson was left stunned, “lying in the snow, seriously injured,” per People.

However, Paltrow claimed in a countersuit it was Sanderson who ran into her and that he was trying to “exploit her celebrity and wealth.”

As seen in live Court TV coverage from the courtroom, Paltrow sat next to her attorney in Park City District Court as opening statements began.

According to The Independent, Judge Kent Holmberg announced Tuesday that the jury won’t hear arguments about a purported “hit and run,” saying he had reviewed evidence that proved Paltrow made sure Sanderson didn’t have any major injuries before leaving the scene.

Instead, the jury will hear arguments about who had the right-of-way at the time of the accident. Sanderson claims he was downhill from Paltrow, and she claims the opposite.

In their opening arguments, Sanderson’s attorneys said Paltrow’s “conscious disregard for everyone else skiing” caused Sanderson severe injuries.

“All skiers know that when they’re skiing down the mountain, it’s their responsibility to pay attention, look downhill, and yield the right-of-way to skiers below them,” one of Sanderson’s attorneys added.

But Paltrow’s countersuit, also filed in 2019, maintains that he was the one who caused the collision.

“She did not knock him down. He knocked her down. He was not knocked out,” the counterclaim contends. “Ms. Paltrow was skiing carefully. She skied slowly to stay behind her children, who were receiving skiing instruction slightly further down the mountain.”

The civil trial is expected to last eight days, as a Park City District Court spokesperson told The Salt Lake Tribune.
