Governor Healey to attend the inauguration of Chancellor Javier Reyes at UMass Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Governor Maura Healey will join the University of Massachusetts Amherst community on Friday, for the inauguration of Chancellor Javier Reyes, the university’s 31st leader.

The ceremony, which will commence at 10:30 a.m. at the Mullins Center, will feature Governor Healey as one of the distinguished speakers.

Chancellor Reyes, who took office on July 1, 2023, brings a student-focused vision aimed at advancing UMass Amherst as a leading educational institution and economic catalyst. Notably, the event will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Alumni Association, the football Spring Game, and UMass Founders Day, symbolizing a pivotal moment in the university’s history.

Governor Healey’s participation in the inauguration underscores the significance of UMass Amherst as a cornerstone of higher education in the Commonwealth. Her attendance reflects her commitment to academic excellence and innovation, as well as supporting the university’s leadership in shaping the future of education.

Following the inauguration, Governor Healey will announce a new initiative aimed at supporting tree plantings in environmental justice communities. The program, intended to enhance green spaces and address environmental disparities, underscores the administration’s dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being.

Additionally, Energy & Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper, DCR Commissioner Brian Arrigo, Mayor of Chicopee John Vieau, and local elected officials will join Governor Healey for the announcement of the Cooling Corridors initiative.

Scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Stefanik Elementary School in Chicopee, this event aims to address heat-related challenges in urban areas through innovative urban planning and green infrastructure.
