Girl, age 9, dies as inferno tears through Brooklyn home

A 9-year-old girl died early Friday after a massive fire tore through her Brooklyn home, police and FDNY officials said.

The blaze broke out in the three-story home on Howard Ave. near Blake Ave. in Brownsville about 5:20 a.m. and spread quickly, FDNY Deputy Chief James Carney said at the scene.

“The initial call was for an odor of smoke,” Carney said. “When we arrived there was heavy fire on the second floor.”

The fire spread to the third floor, where the child was found in the back of the building.

She was rushed to an area hospital, but couldn’t be saved. Her name was not immediately disclosed.

Dr. Burchell Marcus, a community director and advocate for the borough of Brooklyn, said the victim was the homeowner’s granddaughter.

“They woke up to the fire. The family made it out, but a granddaughter died of smoke inhalation,” Marcus said. “The fire engulfed the house pretty good.”

More than 130 firefighters tackled the fire, which took more than two hours to extinguish, Chief Carey said.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury battling the blaze.

The cause of the fire was under investigation Friday.
