Already controversial conservative Congressman-elect George Santos is now under federal investigation over his finances.
The US attorney’s office in the Eastern District of New York is examining Santos’ finances, according to CBS News and CNN. Santos has been scrutinized for the $700,000 he loaned his campaign to run for Congress.
Nassau County is also launching an investigation into Santos’ reported fabrications.
“The numerous fabrications and inconsistencies associated with Congressman-Elect Santos are nothing short of stunning,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. She added that anyone living in New York’s 3rd Congressional District “must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress. No one is above the law and if a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.”
Santos has been making headlines after he admitted to “embellishing” his resume. He said he had falsely claimed he had graduated from college, worked for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, and that he was Jewish; he clarified that he meant “Jew-ish.”
Republicans and Democrats alike have called for Santos to resign.
“GOP Congressman-elect George Santos, who has now admitted his whopping lies, should resign. If he does not, then @GOPLeader should call for a vote to expel @Santos4Congress,” Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) tweeted.

Fellow Congressman-elect from Long Island Nick Lalota said on Tuesday that he was concerned by the unfolding news: “I believe a full investigation by the House Ethics Committee and, if necessary, law enforcement, is required.”
Santos’ election to Congress contributes to what will be the Republicans’ slim majority in the House, starting next week.
